Special Indigenous Guest

As we returned to school this week there was a lot going on inside the building. Our grade 5/6 class spent all week doing School at the Legislature, which gave them a virtual experience with our provincial government. It was so exciting to see students interviewing our Lieutenant-Governor, the Speaker of the House and other notable members of the legislature. Hats off to Mrs. Goodfellow for organizing this amazing experience.

We also had a special speaker, Angus Cockney, come to talk to our students about his experiences as an Indigenous Canadian on Thursday. He is a former Olympian, 2 time national champion in cross country skiing and accomplished sculptor. His message to always persevere and put our hope in the Lord was inspiring. As parents, you may also be seeing some string games being played at home which were taught to the students by Mr. Cockney.

Thank you to everyone who took part in our apple fundraiser! We surpassed our goal of 100 boxes and sold 162 boxes. This was a great first order for us. It was almost a tie for most boxes sold with just a Honeycrisp apart! Congratulations to the Sommers family on selling 14 boxes and coming right up behind them the VanderMeys with 13. Delivery is Tuesday October 26 and will be at High River Baptist. Watch for further details to follow with delivery timing and we will also be looking for a couple volunteers for unloading and sorting.

Our Eagles were busy again this week with many games all over the Foothills. I want to say a special shout-out to the coaches and to our parent volunteers who drive our students to the games. We are so grateful and recognize that we couldn’t do this without you!

And as a personal highlight, I was able to take some time with the 1/2 class to read with them. We went through The Book with No Pictures, which had me saying some really silly things that had us all laughing.

Just a reminder, this week ahead is a short week as the staff heads to Calgary for the annual ACSI Convention on Thursday and Friday for PD time.

I wish you all a wonderful weekend of peace and rest with family.

Quinn Barreth, Principal
